Family Group Costumes

The Raggedy Ann and Andy outfits were made with various left overs. For example, the leggings were sleeves cut off of a of tight knit sweater. We just sewed them tighter to fit my twins tiny legs .The apron was a old white skirt that I cut in half .I ripped off the waist and then measured it against my daughters dress& after I ruffled & pinned the apron my mom sewed it so that Raggedy would look authentic.I then cut a circle out of the white left over material .Once the circle was cut I showed my mom where I wanted her to sew.She sewed a circle around the inside of the circle.I then pulled one of the threads & gathered it into a poufed cap shape. My mom then sewed the gathered areas to set the cap look.I then attached a homemade fringe of red precut yarn around the inside of the cap .My mom sewed the fringe to both caps for their hair.Raymond (her twin) wore homemade pants with 2 strips of the same material sewn on as suspenders. His shirt was an old white blouse we altered

Costume Instructions
a dress/shift that fits your daughter loosely as long as it has a peter pan collar & puffed half/quarter sleeves. A large adults skirt will be cut in half lenghtwise, insure the fit by doubling amount of material as once you measure the skirt material using your daughters dress as a pattern make sure you adjusted the apron to fit across the dress bodice .it should start from underarm to underarm.sew long horizontal line running across the top of the apron/skirt .gather the material by pulling the bottom thread of that sewn line .once you have gathered enough of the top of the apron then fold the material over to secure the gathering make a secure nice looking seam across the top .attacj 2 log strips of the skirt material on the top of the apron and also on each sides as belts.sew the bottom into the desired length.you can sew rick rack as decoration.I cut out a circle for the cap from the left over skirt material.measure a circle arond your child head the brim of the cap will fit where the inner circle should be drawn then sewed .sew a circle inside the circle according to your child as the sewn circle will be where the pouf of the Raggedy Anns cap also begins.pull the bottom thread slowly so that the material gathers as you turn the circle while continueing gathering .We stopped to check the size of the gathering to ensure it fit my daughters head .Sew over the evenly gathered round material to secure the pouf cap shape.Again sew rick rack if desired aroind the brim. The leggings can be store bought or made by cutting & sewing .Anns bloomers are 2 times the amot of amterial needed for a childs pants .I cropped the material to fit like blommers bove the knees.sew into pant shapes but keep in mind that they have to be big & baggy.sew an elastic waist on the bloomers.each leg also has to have an elastic seam so the legs will poof out for the bloomer affect around the bottom. Andy's pants are just his pants that were homemade but any loose straight legged pants will do .get matching material that will be cut & fit into strips.measure the lenght & width needed for the suspenders by the fit of the pants on the child .Sew on velcro to attach the strips on each side to use as suspenders on Andy's pants, suspenders can be bought as long as the color matches the pants.any shirt/blouse forAndy is ok as long as the top has a peter pan collar. The main idea is a raggedy looking child/children.No major sewing skills need as this must have a finihed tailered look.
