Costume Instructions

Prep Time: appx 15-20 hrs (maybe more)

Costume Materials
Tin man- Oil funnel, 4 pieces of standard sized posterboard, silver paint, silver tape, 3 oven roasting pans. One for each arm and 1 for the shoulders. Grey shirt & pants
Cowardly lion- fake fur, cheap one piece costume, raffia, curling iron, face paint.
Scarecrow- burlap material, raffia dark sweat pants and dark oversized shirt, red face paint or red lipstick.

Costume Instructions
Tin man- We painted a oil funnel with silver tempra paint. the body was 2 pieces of poster board fastened with brads and then painted silver. The shoulder was an oven roasting pan with a hole cut in the middle, then shaped to fit over the shoulders. The arms were oven roasting pans as well, crunched to fit over the arms. We used 2 more pieces of poster board cut in half, fastened with brads and painted silver for the legs. We used the silver paint to paint his face and hands. He also wore a grey shirt underneath and we used silver tape for the "loins".

Cowardly lion- I bought a cheap little yellow costume and embellished it with fake fur. I cut out upside down triangles out of fake fur and sewed them to the bottom of the pant legs and to the tops of the arm cuff -so they looked like paws. I rolled up material length wise and sewed on some more fake fur for a long tail, I cut out a piece of fake fur for the stomach and sewed it on to the costume. And now for my favorite part-his hat. I made a pattern from a hood and did one seam up the middle of the back. It didn't really matter how it looked because at that point I hot-glued raffia to the hood and then spent the next few hours curling the raffia with a 1" curling iron! Painted his nose black and voila-the cutest cowardly lion you ever did see!

Scarecrow- By the time I had made my husbands and son's costume there really was only about 1/2 hr left to throw mine together so I grabbed a pair of grey sweats hot-glued raffia to the bottom underside of my sweats, hot glued a patch and raffia on my pant leg & tied a few strings of raffia around my waist.
I used about 1/4 yd of white burlap (gunny sack) material cut in the shape of a 2 triangles and used a big quilting needle to stitch my hat together with orange embroidery thread. For my shoulder piece I just had another 1/4 of a yard of the burlap cut a big hole in it and stitched with the embroidery thread oversized stitches. Then I painted my nose in an upside down triangle with red lipstick and we were off to see the wizard!
