Family Group Costumes
Nicky is a magician, and his sister Audrey is a bunny in a hat. My prep time includes not only the costumes but also the conveyance and the big hat that Audrey was in.
Costume Instructions
Prep Time: 6 hours
Costume Materials
1. black top hat
2. wooden dowel and black and white paint for magic wand
3. black and white satin fabric for cape (24" x 24")
4. vest
5. tie
6. white button-down shirt
7. black pants
8. black socks
9. black shoes
Bunny -
1. one-piece white, fuzzy pajamas with hood
2. white tights
3. white shoes
4. fuzzy white & pink fabric and wire for ears
5. fuzzy white fabric and pink pom-pom for face
6. clear mask to glue face onto
7. white mittens with fuzzy white fabric for paws
8. big white pom-pom for tail
Big top hat -
1. green plastic fencing (like what you use around tomato plants)
2. circular piece of cardboard to attach to top of fencing for brim of hat
3. black felt - enough to cover the whole hat, including brim
4. white satin fabric for band of hat
5. glue and electrical tape (or any black tape) to hold everything together
*the hat we made was open on the bottom, so our bunny could walk around with it - we made suspenders out
Costume Instructions
Bunny - form the wire into good ear shapes. Fold the fuzzy, white fabric around the wire, and sew it into ear shapes. Attach the pink fabric in front, and sew the ears to the hood of the pajamas. For the paws, sew enough fuzzy, white fabric to the mittens to cover any exposed arm, and attach with safety pins to the sleeves of the pajamas. For the face, glue the white fabric to the mask to make it look like a bunny. Glue the nose, and add whiskers if you like (black yarn works well, but we didn't use it). Cut away any part of the mask that you don't need. Attach tail at the back (sew on or use safety pins).
Big hat - form fencing into a circle (tube) the height and width you need to accommodate the bunny (it should be up to her chest when she is standing, with enough space for her to squat down inside). Cut off any excess. Hold it together with black electrical tape (or any black tape - this will also help to cover any points left from cutting the fencing). Also use black tape around the top, to hide the green. Attach a circle of cardboard or foam for the brim (this needs to be lightweight if the bunny is going to carry it at all). We sewed on the brim, but it could easily be taped on. Take the black felt, and wrap the hat, being sure to cover around the bottom, as well as around the brim. We sewed some and used glue to attach the felt. Then wrap the white satin band aroud just below (if it's standing on its top) the brim - glue on. The band should be at least 6" wide. If the bunny is going to be carrying the hat, make sure you have left the bottom (which is the top of the hat) open. Attach two 2-inch strips of transparent vinyl to the hat with safety pins as suspenders (use the child to make sure these are the right length and at the right location), and the bunny is able to walk with the hat.
**If you want to make the conveyance -- The conveyance is a flat trolley. We used a large piece of cardboard painted black to attach to the back (at the handle). We added a curtain rod at the top to attach the valance, and tacked red curtains (just plain red fabric) to the cardboard under the valance. We used this for a Halloween parade, and we wanted it to look like a stage for a magic show.
