Family Group Costumes

As fans of "The Wizard of OZ", our family decided to dress up as the characters from the movie. Dad was the Cowardly Lion,Mom the Scarecrow, sister was Dorothy and brother was the Tin Man.All characters that are very familiar to the average American, who more than likely " grew up" watching this movie and would know these characters with no explaination. The lion costume was lovingly made from golden fleece and the coolest fake fur for the mane and around the legs. Scarecrow's pants came from the Salvation Army, but his shirt was handmade from hunter green flannel, the costume was accented with raffia for straw. Dorothy was in a borrowed costume that someone elses mother made, but we got new shoes from Target! She also carried a basket with Toto and wore a Dorothy wig from Lillian Vernon . Last, but not least, the Tin Man was all shiny in a costume made from silver material accented with silver beads, a silver painted funnel for a hat and, of course, he wore his heart on his chest.

Costume Instructions

Prep Time: 1 week sewing,4 hrs shopping

Costume Materials
We used McCall's pattern MP394 for the lion, size XL,4 1/2 yd fleece,7/8 yd fake fur, gold thread and velcro. We also bought the nosepiece from JoANN fabric. We used Simplicity pattern 4042 for the Tin Man, size 2, 2 1/8 yd silver fabric, 11 silver beads, silver thread, 6" funnel and silver spray paint. We purchased pants from the Salvation Army for the scarecrow, using Simplicity pattern 8392 for the shirt, size 14. The top was meant to be sleeveless, so my mother used her ingenuity to add sleeves, 2 yd hunter green flannel, thread, and using rafia for straw, she sewed rafia to bands that closed with velcro to go around wrists, ankles and the neck. The head cover and hat were purchased from a Halloween Costume store. We borrowed the Dorothy costume ( it was homemade by someone 3 years ago ! ), purchased the wig and basket from Lillian Vernon, and purchased shoes from Target.

Costume Instructions
Following the directions listed on the guide sheets for patterns ( McCall's MP394 and Simplicity 4024) we made the Lion and Tin Man costumes. We substituted silver beads for the silver buttons on the Tin Man .Using Simplicity pattern 8392 for the body of the Scarecrow's shirt, rectangles the length of my arms, were cut out and added to the shirt for sleeves. Then elastic was sewn around the sleeves at the wrist. Rafia was cut about 6" long and sewn to 1" wide bands of fabric for around the wrists and ankles. These fastened with velcro. For around the neck, the rafia was cut about 9" and sewn to a fabric band, which also closed with velcro.
