"Ants at a Picnic Costume"

My twin sons, Michael and Mark were the ants while my husband and I switched roles as the woman and man. I made the ant costumes by painting their old bike helmets black and affixing eyes(head). They wore black turtlenecks(thorax). And for the tail, I paper mached two balloons and secured them in black hosery and attached them onto their shirts. I took the hairy legs off of a giant spider I found at the halloween store and sewed them onto their turtlenecks for legs.
After taking plywood and covering it with a cheap plastic red checkerboard table cloth, I made a few food items out of foam and paper mache. I did a half eaten apple, a watermelon slice, and a sandwich. All were done on a large scale to make up for our BIG ants. I cut two holes into the plywood and set it onto the kids wagon.
The boys climbed into the holes to hide the lower half of their bodies. The final product was amazing! They looked like real ants!
Costume Instructions
Prep Time: 4 hours + time paper mache dry
Costume Materials
Bike helmet
Black Turtleneck
Balloon(newpaper, flour, and water to paper mache)
Black Paint
Pipe cleaners (antennae)
Plastic Eyes
Pair black pantyhose
BIG spider legs from prop, remove and sew onto turtle neck under arm area. Bend into M's shape
needle and thread
PICNIC TABLE:
Piece of plywood
Table cloth
saw (put hubby to work)
Staple gun...to hold cloth down
wagon to hold the plywood
FOOD:
Apple: LARGE Balloon for apple (newspaper, flour, and water to paper mache) Dent one side to make it look like bite taken out
Red and White Paint (apple colors)
Sandwich: 4 same size pieces of styrofoan
Pink, yellow, and brown paint (meat, cheese, and crust colors)
Glue Stick (hold sandwich together)
Saw, to cut bite out of sandwich
Watermelon: One large piece of styrofoad cut to triangle
Green, black,and red paint(rhine, seeds, and melon colors)
Costume Instructions
head: paint helmet black, glue on eyes and antenae
thorax: sew black "bendi" spider legs onto shirt under
arm area (2 on each side)
Tail: place papermache'd balloon into end of black pantyhose, tie in knot, and sew onto mid back of shirt.
Dress with helmet, turtle neck, and tail.
Cut hole in plywood for person's waist, + extra 3 inches diameter. Place tablecloth on, and staple down. Cut x into table cloth over hole.
Use hot glue to affix food onto table.
