"Alice in Wonderland Costume"

Family Group Costumes

I don't think we've ever used store bought costumes and everyone actually agreed this year to "themed costumes." Alice in Wonderland is what we decided on. Taking a mix of classic Disney Alice in Wonderland, a live action movie and assorted internet search results, we adapted it all to create our own costumes. We have Alice, of course, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and an Ace of Spades card to make up our group.

Costume Instructions

Prep Time: 2-3 weeks

Costume Materials
Assortment of fabrics purchased at a fabrics store and an upholstery store. One store bought wig, a few hand crafted props, a little paint, lots and lots of cutting and sewing!

Costume Instructions
All of the costume pieces were handmade from patterns using 'alterations' where desired. Imagination is most helpful here~

Alice's dress was adapted from an adult version and made of costume satin. The apron is a sparkly costume fabric (but you can't see that in the picture).

The White Rabbit costume is an adapted version of a pirate's made of fabric gotten at an upholstery store. (Clearance sales are a personal favorite!)

The Mad Hatter's costume was created using the same pattern as was used for Alice's, an old vest pattern and a third one used last year to make a jacket for a Riddler costume. All of this was created using upholstery fabrics. I think the hat was the most difficult thing to make. Two layers of foam covered in crushed velvet is tough to sew on ANY machine!

The Queen of Hearts costume was created using two separate patterns and lots of imagination! All the fabric was Halloween costume fabric, yards and yards of it actually. A little handpainting, lots of stitching, add a purchased wig and crown to finish it off!

The Ace of Spades was designed using the classic Alice in Wonderland movie. Black clothing underneath the card front and back, adapted from a tunic pattern and made of Halloween costume fabric and some quilted fabric and a hood adapted from a mideavel hats pattern were all that was needed. We added a half painted rose and a 'fancied up' paint can for props.

All in all, the costumes were a huge success! We were definitely recognized as who we were dressed up as and everyone loved their costumes. Now....what shall we do for next year? Hmmmmm.....
