Description

Celebrating Christmas in China with dancing gingerbread pandas, a Tree a Light (Chinas version of the Christmas tree) and a beautiful gingerbread pagoda may be a bit unusual for a gingerbread house theme but it is perfect for a second grade study of Christmas traditions around the world. Chinese gift giver Dun Che Lao Ren watches over the village giving out presents and wishing everyone long life and happiness.

Ingredients

1 pre-made gingerbread house kit including candies
1 pre-made Christmas tree kit including candies
20 gingerbread men (or one per student)
1 large package powdered sugar
1 can meringue powder
2 Wilton white cookie icing bottles, color one black using black coloring
1 package pink wafer cookies
1 package licorice cut to fit roof
Candy canes

Block of Styrofoam to form base
Optional-small stature of Chinese gift giver Dun Che Lao Ren

How to Make

  • Glue blocks of Styrofoam to for a pyramid base.

    Next turn the gingerbread men into pandas. First use white cookie icing to form bellies and heads. Set aside to dry. Next add black arms, legs, eyes, noses and ears. Set aside to dry.

  • Make Tree of Light according to the directions but to not attach yet, set aside.
    Make royal icing according to the directions. You will need extra. Follow the directions on the can.
    Make pre-made house, use royal icing glue it sideways on the top. Add candy canes and licorice for Chinese style roof. Next add wafers to form stairs. Ice remaining pyramid blocks. Add dancing pandas with icing. Add tree of light and Chinese gift giver. Use candy to decorate the remaining village.

    Tips for Taking a Great Photo:
    • Avoid clutter. Keep the background simple -- your gingerbread house or holiday cookie is the star!
    • Daytime, natural light is best. If your area is bright enough, try taking the photo without the flash.
    • Upload a horizontal photo. If you crop the image on your computer, make sure you keep a landscape 4:3 aspect ratio.
    • For best results, make your image 1200x900 (or "save for web").
    • With a digital camera, you can take as many photos as possible and choose the best one. Have fun!
