B&B French Toast
We enjoyed this most delicious treat on a picture-perfect snowy morning at a Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast. Baked in a puddle of brown sugar, butter and cinnamon, this decadent and comforting breakfast is so good you won't believe how easy it is to make. Because it is assembled the night before, all you have to do in the morning is pop it in the oven…and brew the coffee.
Hands-On Time: 10 minutes
Ready In: 1 hour, plus overnight
Yield: 6-8 servings
Ingredients
1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoons dark corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 loaf of (preferably un-sliced) cinnamon-swirl bread
4 ounces of cream cheese, cut into little cubes
Pinch of nutmeg
5 eggs
1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Directions
- In a medium saucepan, melt together butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and cinnamon. Cook until sugar is dissolved.
- Pour in a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Cut bread into 1-inch thick slices. Remove crusts and cut into large cubes. Place bread on top of brown sugar mixture in the pan. Top with cubes of cream cheese.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla and nutmeg. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit and Canadian bacon or sausage.
