During their search for Nemo, Marlin and Dory bounced through a sea of puffy, pink jellyfish. This cake helps to tell the story of their high seas adventure.
- 7-ounce tube marzipan, found in bakery aisle
- Gel food coloring (orange, black, blue, yellow and teal)
- 2 9-inch round cakes, baked from your favorite recipe
- 2 12-ounce cans whipped frosting, white or vanilla
- 3 to 4 dome-shaped, marshmallow-covered, packaged cupcakes (we used Hostess Sno-balls)
- 1 can pink icing (we used Easy Flow Icing, Betty Crocker)
- 1 cup vanilla cookies, crumbled (optional for garnish)
1. To make Marlin and Dory, divide marzipan into five equal pieces and place each in a small bowl. Add a few drops of food coloring to four of the marzipan pieces, making one piece orange, one black, one yellow, and one blue. Leave one piece of marzipan natural white. Knead the food coloring into the marzipan dough until fully incorporated. This can get messy, so be sure to wear an apron or smock, and wash hands when finished. Have fun! Kids can roll marzipan just like clay.
2. For Marlin, roll half of your orange marzipan into a ball, then pinch the ball into a teardrop shape with a flat end (as shown) for Marlin's tail.
3. Tear small pieces from the remaining orange marzipan for Marlin's fins. Put a fin on each side of his body and attach two small dorsal fins on top.
4. Pinch the rounded end of Marlin's body to make two small sockets for eyes. Roll white marzipan into balls and place in sockets.
5. Add black marzipan pupils and a smile. Roll white marzipan into 3 small snakes and lay across Marlin's back.
6. For Dory, roll blue marzipan into a ball. Pinch into a flat, oval shape (as shown).
7. Shape and press on a yellow tail fin and two yellow pectoral fins.
8. Pinch Dory's rounded face to make two small eye sockets. Roll white marzipan into balls and place in sockets.
9. Add black marzipan pupils and a black marzipan dorsal fin. Parent's job: Use a knife, to cut out a triangle for Dory's mouth.
10. For the cake, put white frosting in a large bowl and add a few drops of teal food coloring. Stir the frosting as you add the color. A little bit of food coloring goes a long way, and you will only need a few drops.
11. Place one 9-inch cake on a serving platter. Spread the top with frosting. Place the second layer on top of the first layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with clean, smooth strokes.
12. Place 3 to 4 Sno-balls around the edge of the cake. These are the jellyfish bodies.
13. To make the tentacles, use Easy Flow icing to draw squiggly pink lines from the Jellyfish Sno-ball down the side of the cake.
14. Use toothpicks to attach Marlin and Dory to the tops of the jellyfish. (Remember to remove toothpicks before serving!)
15. Garnish your serving platter with crushed vanilla cookie "sand."
