this is very helpful. And we alwways keep plenty of rice in our house. You can use the rice in casseroles. For dinner last nite I use rice to make a chicken casserole

for a quick meatloaf I use a box of stuffing mix and a pack of hamburg and 2or3eggs Mix all together. If not holding together to good add a little milk. I use any flavor of stuffing what ever I have in my pantry. Then before I bake it I put some ketchup on the top of it. And bake and your done. Just bake like you would your regular meat loaf. I do the same for porkpine meatballs but I add a little rice to it. Works good for me and my family like it.

I always try to have some soups and veggies on hand for when we run low on the fresh or frozen produce. Plus, I can always make a killer soup out of them!

All of these are in my kitchen, plus corn startch as I think it's a better thickner then flour. you only need to use 1 tablesppon to a cup of liquid versus 2 tablespoons flour and it gives your sauce a nice glean like you have added butter.

I would have to add a few to this list to make meals eaiser and that would be, Cream of Mushroom soup and Crem of Chicken, both make quick meals when your tired or running low.
And I'm rarely caught without cheese of some sort in my home also for making many meals quick and simple but wonderful.

I'm actually surprised: I have most of these things! Like Photo-Drew, I rely on canned beans.
I always make sure to have Tony Chachere's Seasoning handy: There's a no-sodium version and it's good on everything, not just Cajun fare: http://www.cajuncreations.com/detail.aspx?ID=218

Thanks so much for this list! I have always felt like there is a secret list of things that good cooks simply have on hand so that they can just whip things up in a jiffy. Now I feel in the know.

I never feel complete without olive oil (good quality) in my cupboard. I'm not sure how necessary dried beans are -- canned is fine for beans, and so much easier.
