Power Play Symbols
New school year? Math test? Dentist appointment? New job? All these situations can make any stomach flip-flop as the proverbial butterflies take flight. So to keep that fluttering at bay, I suggest creating a touchstone to evoke courage -- a touchstone in the form of a Power T-shirt! This shirt features a uniquely designed symbol that has powerful meaning to the wearer. My touchstone is a butterfly -- a fierce and radiant one to keep all harm-doers away. Maybe yours will be a lightning bolt. Or a star, a spiral, or a tiger stripe. What will you come up with for your T-shirt?
Here's what you need:
- Pencil and paper
- T-shirt
- Cardstock
- Craft knife (for adult use only)
- Sponges or sponge brush
- Acrylic paint
- Old dish towel or pillow case
- Iron
Sketch out your ideas before you put anything on your shirt. Keep in mind that you're going to ultimately be cutting out a stencil so you don't want your symbol to be too complicated. When you've come up with one that you like, draw it on a sheet of cardstock working within an approximate 4 inch by 6 inch area. Cut out the stencil.
Next, lay out the T-shirt so it's nice and flat, slip another piece of cardstock into the shirt area that you'll be painting on (so the paint doesn't seep through to the back of the shirt). Place the stencil in place. I recommend centering it in the top half of the T's front.
Next dip your sponge into acrylic paint and dab on. If you intend to use a second color, make sure the first one is dry before proceeding. After you've applied the paint, carefully lift the stencil.
Let the shirt dry for 24 hours. Then have an adult iron the symbol on medium-high heat. Be sure to place an old dish towel or something similar on top of the painted symbol so you don't get pain on the iron.
Pull it on. Feel the adrenaline!
