A Royal Portrait for Father's Day
How about a "Royal Portrait" for Father's Day?-- worthy of the king himself! Kids can capture dad's likeness in a fantastic, found-object collage. And not only will his handsome face be revealed but his talents, hobbies and funny quirks too. It's a masterpiece that will tell his story!
For Part I, you'll need...
Part I:
- cereal box
- scissors
- paint
- brushes
- white glue
- colored paper
- printed paper (magazine pages, wrapping paper, junk mail)
- yarn or string for hair
- oil pastels (or markers) for details
Now, on to Part II:
Now, seek out objects that represent a quality, feature or interest of Dad's! To reveal the many layers of Dad, invite your kids to write out a ten question survey for him to answer. Ask things like: What's your favorite gum? What's your lucky number? Where in the world would you like to visit? Answering these questions will help dictate the sorts of collage materials you'll need. Examples: golf tee, ticket stub, picture postcard, mis-matched game piece, cork, button, paper clip, dried pasta noodles, other odds and ends plucked from the junk drawer.
Steps
Begin with the art material of champions - an empty cereal box. Ask for an adult's help to cut the cereal box in half to make two shadow-box frames. To do this, make a vertical cut down both thin sides of the cereal box and then across the bottom. Voilá! Two frames ready to be filled!
Next, select one half and paint the inside and "inside sides" of the box. You may wish to use Dad's favorite color and its complements. Swirls, stripes, blending encouraged! No details-- just color coverage. Let it dry.
Using an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of colored paper, cut out a large silhouette- head, ears, neck, shoulders. You'll find that you have two pieces to choose from- the positive and negative images. Choose one and glue it into place in your frame.
Now for the story... Once upon a time, there lived a regal dad who... Well, what's your dad's story? Does he like Italian food? Then pasta noodles for eyebrows! Is he a philatelist? Represent his hobby by making sideburns out of postage stamps! Does he play golf? A golf tee makes a great nose. Does he like to travel? How about cuts from a picture postcard for a shirt collar. Is he good at checkers? Then king the guy with a checker for an eye! What else will you think of?
Now present your masterpiece to Dad and be sure to tell him the meaning behind each collage object! This artful and heart-full gift will make him feel like a king! Ta-da!
