Drive-In Movie Night
You may not have the old station wagon to pile into and there may not be a drive-in movie theater in your town anymore... but don't let that stop you from recreating that very magical experience from years ago. I'm talking about installing an outdoor theater in your own backyard! What a way to wow the kids and simultaneously push that nostalgic button of your own! Buckle up... and I'll tell you just what to do...
First of all, a screen comes to mind. Find a long extension cord and bring your TV outside. Of course, you'll find a sturdy table or garden wall to set it on in a spot with optimal viewing for your anticipated audience. If you cannot move the TV then you could either use a compact movie machine or do what my friends Stacy & Danny do and rent a giant inflatable movie screen! Whoa!
Next, what's playing? In my family, we always screen musicals. Many appeal to a broad range of ages-- and the opportunity to dress up as the characters and sing along is fantastic. Be sure to give your guests a couple of days notice so that they can "rehearse"-- get their costume together and warm up their pipes! Print out lyric sheets ahead of time so that everyone will join the chorus. You may even wish to have prizes for costumes so invent several categories so everyone wins: Most Original, Cutest, Best Immitation, Best Baritone, Loveliest Voice, Most Dramatic, etc.
Next, movie treats! You can make paper cones to serve popcorn by rolling up a piece of newspaper or construction paper by the corner. You can even serve "classic" movie candy like red licorice sticks or chocolate covered raisins.
What a way to spend a gorgeous evening outdoors under the stars with the stars!
