This out-of-this-world costume is glamorous and clever, thanks to a tongue-in-cheek title and a star-studded crown.

| What you need: | |
| 2 yards of sheer, glittery fabric (ours was 60 inches wide
and cost $6 a yard)
Pencil or chalk Plastic bag Paintbrush Tacky glue Scissors Wire cutters 3 packages of silver star garland (about $1 each at craft stores) 1 sheet of silver poster board 13 feet of 22-gauge silver wire Double-sided tape 18 inches of sequin trim Adhesive-backed Velcro 1/3 yard of white satin fabric (ours was 60 inches wide and cost about $2.75) Black fabric paint 2 yards of silver cording (ours was $2.59 a yard at a fabric store) 2 safety pins | |

| Instructions: | |
| 1. | 
To Make the Dress: With a pencil or chalk, draw an
upside-down, lowercase
t in the center of the fabric. Place a plastic bag under
the
t and brush tacky glue along the pencil lines, about 1/4
inch wide. (This will keep the fabric from fraying when
cut.) |
| 2. | When the glue has dried (about 20 minutes), remove the plastic from the fabric. Cut through the glue lines to make the neck opening. |
| 3. |  With the wire cutters, cut two 12-inch-long pieces of
garland. Slip the fabric over your child's head. At each
shoulder, gather the fabric and loosely wrap a piece of garland
around that gathered fabric to hold it in place. Have her take
off the dress. |
| 4. | To Make the Crown and Jewels: Loop a 9-foot length of garland around your child's head several times. Once you have the proper fit, remove it and twist the ends of the garland into the crown. |
| 5. | Cut 10 pairs of stars (20 in all) from the poster board (we cut 3 small, 4 medium, and 3 large pairs; download our patterns). Cut 10 pieces of wire, ranging from 7 to 12 inches long. Now use the double-sided tape to sandwich one end of wire between each pair of stars. Wrap the other end of each wire around the crown, spacing them fairly evenly. Twist on 3 or 4 pieces of garland as well (ours were 26 inches long). Bend the wires and garland pieces into loops and spirals. |
| 6. | For a necklace, simply cut a length of sequin trim that's about an inch longer than the circumference of your child's neck. Attach Velcro to each end for a clasp. |

To Make the Sash: Fold the satin fabric in thirds as shown
(so you'll have a smooth surface on the front of the sash). Tuck
any frayed ends under and join the folds together with
double-sided tape. |
| 8. | Fold the sash in half lengthwise and use the pencil to sketch out "Miss Universe" on the front, then paint over the letters with fabric paint and let it dry (according to the directions on the label). |

To Don the costume: Slip the dress over your child's head
(she'll need to wear something underneath, such as a leotard and
tights). Tie the cording around her waist and secure a bit of the
garland in the knot. Wrap about 36 inches of garland down each
arm, tying the upper end to the existing garland at each
shoulder. Drape the sash over one shoulder and pin it in place.
Set the crown on her head.
