Turn your girly-girl's princess costume into AARGH-uably the best costume!

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Costume Materials

• any type of princess costume or dance recital dress/costume
• scarves
• leggings (optional)
• boots
• gold hoop earrings (the bigger the better)
• gold bracelet
• dark-toned foundation (make-up)
• makeup application brush (or a medium paint brush)
• black eyeliner
• brown eyeliner
• scissors
• black permanent marker
• pirate hat
• sword (can be purchased or made out of silver painted cardboard)

1. Any princess costume (leftover, of course), dance recital dress, or any dress that will not be worn again (as a dress) will be suitable for creating this pirate costume for a girl.
2. Using scissors, cut holes in the arms of the dress.
3. Cut jagged slits all around bottom of dress making the hemline ragged. Also, cut slits around the hem of the arms in the dress.
4. If the dress has any flowers attached (as ours did), carefully snip the thread where it is sewn to the dress & remove it from the dress.
5. Also, if the dress has any 'feminine' details that aren't removable, use a permanent black marker to color it black. With our dress, we colored the pink ribbon that was sewn into the hem of the bodice. We also colored the clear rhinestones black.
6. We used the scissors to cut slits up the leggings (starting at the bottom). If tights are worn, holes can be cut into these as well.
7. To make the dress look "dirty" like the pirate attire appears, we simply used a cosmetic foundation application brush to smear the dark-toned foundation all over the dress.
8. After the dress, leggings, & boots are on, we used the same brush to apply the dark foundation on the skin of her arms, neck, face, hands, & even her ears (she said that pirates always appear dirty & have fungus in their ears).
9. I applied black eyeliner on both the upper & lower eyelids. I made the line very thick & smeared the edges outwards towards her hairline.
10. Using the brown eyeliner, I outlined her lips & filled the lips in with brown eyeliner.
11. We wrapped one scarf around her waist & tied the sword to her side with the scarf (so she wouldn't have something else to keep up with in her hands while trick-or-treating).
12. We used another scarf to wrap around her head. Her hair was pulled back into a (messy) bun (or 1/2 ponytail) & the scarf ends were tied in a knot around the bun & hung down her back.
13. The pirate hat is optional; we already owned one, so she wore it.
14. We accessorized the outfit with large gold hoop earrings & a large gold bracelet. Other accessories that go along with this costume (if you have these laying around the house or in the toybox) are a parrot, small "pocket" telescope, eyepatch, small treasure chest, large coins, compass, skull patterned material, gold teeth, & dreadlocked (dirty, of course) hair. (With the make-up on the dress or skirt, make sure the pirate doesn't sit on any furniture or in the car without pulling the dress or skirt up, or sitting on a disposable bag first.)
