Fire Truck Costume

Costume Instructions
  1. Cut 1.5 inches off rim of one paper reem box.
  2. Place 2 paper reem boxes end to end face down.
  3. Connect 2 paper reem boxes together with 2" industrial paper tape.
  4. Cut 12" DIA hole in forward box.
  5. Cover box assembly with red pleather adhering pleather to under and insided box assembly.
  6. Paint (6) floral half rounds with flat black paint.
  7. Cut (6) 5.5" DIA circles from silver card stock and decorate as wheels with permanent marker.
  8. Hot glue (6) silver card stock wheels to bottom of (6) floral half rounds.
  9. Attach wheel assemblies to box assembly with 1/4-20 bolt and lock nut with 2 wheels in front and 4 wheels in back of the "driver".
  10. Cut 3/4" x 1/4" wood strips to fit between front and back wheels. Paint black and attach to lower edge of truck body to strengthen truck frame.
  11. Cut soft foam into 1" x 1" strip. Attach a 12" strip of soft foam straight across rear end of truck for back bumper.
  12. Attach 15" strip of soft foam from left front lower side of truck around front to right front lower side to form front bumber.
  13. Cut and arrange gold contact paper to decorate fire truck.
  14. Add stickers or draw fire truck decals on each side of truck.
  15. Cut a typical christmas paper roll into two pieces lengthwise. Paint black and trim ends with gold contact paper. Hot glue one roll to each side toward rear of truck as "hoses".
  16. Cut or punch holes in front, top forward center, top left and right and rear of truck as head, tail and emergency light. Hot glue appropriate colored LED lenses into holes.
  17. From bottom of truck, mount battery pack of DC Christmas lights to inside front end of truck.
  18. Run Christmas lights around inside of truck inserting one light into each lens and secure with industrial tape or hot glue.
  19. Hot glue or bolt top piece of typical bicycle bell to front center of truck.
  20. Hot glue or bolt axle caps to left, center and right front of truck.
  21. Fashion coat hangar into ornamental bell holder. Attach through top of truck to the right of the driver and secure inside with industrial tape.
  22. Cut 8" DIA circle of corrugated cardboard.
  23. Cut 6" wide by 12" rectangle of corrugated cardboard.
  24. Cur 1" wide by 16" rectangle of corrugated cardboard.
  25. Cover all cut corrugated with industrial paper tape.
  26. Center 6 by 12" rectangle over 8" circle and mount to truck just behind driver. This will form the swivel mount for the extension ladder.
  27. Cut hard foam into 1" x 1" strips. Cut (10) 4" long strips and (4) 24" long strips.
  28. Lay (2) 24" strips side by side about 4 inches apart. Hot glue a 4" "rung" 1.5 inches from the ends of the 24" ladder rails. Attach a second rung 4 inches from the first. Continue until 5 rungs have been attached leaving about 1.5 inches of ladder rail at the end.
  29. Repeat above step for second ladder section.
  30. Form ladder bracket by folding the 6 x 12" cardboard to be "C" shaped. Fold 3" flaps to 90 degrees on each side. This should form a 3 x 6" rectangle on each side of the ladder mount and a 6 x 6" square on the bottom of the mount.
  31. Attach 1 ladder section to the ladder mount with 1/4-20 bolt and nylon nut. Lay second ladder section on top of first.
  32. Loosely form and wrap 1 x 16" cardboard around top end of lower ladder section. Attach to each side of lower ladder section allowiing enough space for top ladder to telescope from lower ladder.
  33. Fashion ladder cradle near rear of truck with soft foam strip.
  34. Dress costume bearer, turn on the Christmas lights and go have some fun.
