Little Miss Minnie Costume
A homemade version of Minnie Mouse. The pattern I used called for a knit fabric. With a few simple adjustments I was able to use a costume satin with no problem. When I envisioned this costume, I wanted a dress with a full circle skirt that would twirl with ease and be fun to wear...this is what I came up with.
Prep Time: Approximately 2-3 hours
Costume Materials
- Store-bought mouse ears
- black leotard
- black tights
- white gloves
- dress pattern of choice (mine was an easy to sew type!)
- red costume satin fabric (according to pattern directions)
- wide red polka dot ribbon (for sashing and matching bow on ears)
- a little thin polka dot ribbon (for tie at neck in back) and that's it!!
I am not an experienced seamstess, so I chose to make this as easy as possible!
- Start with an easy dress pattern in the appropriate size, the one I used did not require buttons, zipper or interfacing!!
- Purchase required items according to pattern directions. I used about 1 yard of red costume satin, 1 spool of red thread and 2 yards of red polka dot ribbon.
- Lay out and cut fabric according to pattern directions.
- Sew dress according to pattern directions. I kept it all very simple with no fancy stictches or hems!!
- When sewing sashing, sew across top and bottom of ribbon on the dress front, leaving the ribbon to dangle for later tying in the back.
- The pattern I used called for a knit fabric. Because I used a satin that doesn't stretch, I needed cut a 4" slit in the back so I could slip the dress over my daughter's head.
- To finish the the raw edges of the slit, I pressed them down and sewed them so they don't fray. I used a thin red polka dot ribbon at the top for tying at the neck.
The dress is darling and since it has a full circle skirt, it twirls much to my little girl's delight!!!
