This was a onesie that I turned into a duck costume for my 2 year old son who was obsessed with ducks.

Prep Time: 2 weeks Costume Materials

  • 1 yellow onesie
  • 3 yards of yellow curly material (was soft and curly)
  • 1 square of orange craft foam
  • yellow thread
  • a bag of yellow feathers
  • a large bag of polyfil cotton
  • a pair of yellow leggings
Costume Instructions
  1. Cut the curly yellow material so you have a retangle that will fit the bottom, top, and sides of the front of the onesie. You want the rectangle to be about 3 inches wider all around.
  2. Sew it to the seams of the onesie, leaving a corner at bottom to fill the front with a little polyfil.
  3. When filling this costume, remember that your child is going to have to put this over his/her head and that you dont want to stuff it so you cant get your child into the onesie comfortably.
  4. Cut a 16 inch square of the curly yellow material and set aside.
  5. Now you want to take the remaining curly yellow material and make a shape that looks like a giant cornucopia. You want to make sure that the top or opening of the cornucopia will cover the top, sides, and bottom of the back of the onesie.
  6. Sew at the seams of the back of the onesie, then fill with polyfil. Again, keeping in mind that your child will be in this costume and that you want to make them comfortable, not stuffed.
  7. Take the curly material you set aside and fold in half length wise curly sides together. Sew the top of the folded piece, and the top piece only with a 1/2 inch seam. This makes the "duck" hood for the head.
  8. Make a 1/2 inch hem around the material where your child's face will be. Cut a "Bill/Beak" looking shape out of the orange craft foam and attach it to the top of the "hood".
  9. Next, attach the bottom of the hood around the neck of the collar of the back and shoulders of the onesie.
  10. Sew the yellow feathers on top of the hood, the tail, and along the tops of the sleeves of the onesie.
  11. The onesie snaps underneath the child, so this will fit over their head. My son's tail bobbed as he ran and he ran around quacking like a duck wherever we went.
