Punkrock Peacock Costume
This is a peacock costume with a bit of a punk rock twist.
Prep Time: 3 hours
Costume Materials- 100 peacock feathers
- Purple feather boa
- Crushed velvet leotard
- 1/4 yard crushed velvet to match leotard
- Hot glue gun, and plenty of glue sticks
- Industrial double stick Velcro
- 2" black sequined elastic
- Small cardboard squares
- Black tights
- Black boots
- Costume makeup
- Colored hairspray
- Hold the peacock feathers up to your childs waist to determine how tall you want your tail to be. Trim the bottoms of 1/2 of the feathers to this length. Then trim the bottoms of the other half of the feathers 3-4" shorter.
- Cut out two pieces of cardboard, sizing them to fit the shape of your childs lower back.
- Cover both pieces with the crushed velvet. You can just hot glue the fabric on.
- Then lay the covered side down, so the cardboard side is facing up.
- Then begin gluing all the LONG feathers on to the cardboard in a fan. You will want the front part of the feather to be facing UP while you are gluing. I started with one in the middle, and one on each end and then just filled in from there.
- Next, take the other piece of cardboard and lay it down the same way (fabric covered side DOWN) then you will beging gluing the shorter feathers on. This time so the front of the feather is facing you (UP).
- Measure the sequined elastic so that it will fit around your child's waist. Then glue it to the cardboard with the shorter feathers. You want this to make kind of a belt to help keep the tail on once you are done. So, you will be gluing either end to the cardboard and leaving enough space for your child to slip the "belt" on.
- Next you will glue the two pieces of cardboard together, so that you will wind up with two layers of fanned feathers, and each side is covered with the crushed velvet.
- Now, the adhesive Velcro can be stuck onto the back of the leotard, and the part of the tail that will line up with your lower back. You can also sew the Velcro onto the leotard or the velvet, but our industrial stuff worked just fine.
- Next you want to use the feather boa and just glue it around the edges of the cardboard in the back. You can also use it to sew onto the cuffs or anywhere else on the leotard. I used purple and blue hair spray and make up to make her look more punk and peacock.
