Sparkly red scales and a tough leather tummy make this Baby Dragon costume a sensory experience for baby.

Prep Time: 3-4 hours

Costume Materials
  • 1/2 yard sparkly scale stretchy fabric (any color)
  • 1/4 yard faux leather fabric (with scale imprint, if possible)
  • small bag of stuffing
  • needle and thread (or liquid stitch to avoid sewing)
  • straight pins
  • 12 inches of ribbon or string
  • marker or pen
  • newspaper or old grocery circulars
Costume Instructions
  1. Use a onesie that the baby currently fits to fashion a pattern out of a newspaper or old grocery circular. Note that most onesies are made of stretchy fabric and therefore will appear smaller when not on baby; you should choose a onesie that doesn't need to stretch much to fit on baby to make your pattern. Simply place the onesie as flat as possible on the newspaper and trace around it with a pen or marker. Be sure to trace an extra inch around the onesie to give you ample room to sew.
  2. Cut three different sized triangles out of the newspaper to act as patterns for the scales on the back of the costume, one long triangular piece for the tail, one diamond-shaped piece for the scale on the end of the tail, and a large circle for the tummy on the front of the costume.
  3. Attach pattern pieces to your fabrics with straight pins and cut out each piece. You will need two each of the scales, tail, and tail-scale so that you can sew them together and stuff them. Assemble pieces together and sew them together. Lightly stuff the scales and tail with stuffing for a 3-D effect. It helps to attach the scales to the back and tummy on the front before you unite the front and back pieces together. You can sew by hand (the project is small and doesn't take long), by machine, or use liquid stitch to avoid sewing altogether! The total time estimated to make this costume is calculated based on hand-sewing. Don't worry about making perfect stitches; it will be dark when the child is dressed up anyways!
  4. Cut a slit in the back from the neck hole down about 4 inches and attach a piece of short ribbon to each side (about 4 inches of ribbon on each side). To avoid a safety hazard, do not make the ribbons too long. This step allows you a way to put the costume easily on and off the child.
  5. Child can wear tights with this costume for a complete look, and to add warmth. You can add sheer fabric "wings" to each side of the scales if you want to be more creative, and extra scales sewn onto a bonnet make a more complete look. Experiment with different color combinations of fabric to make your Baby Dragon costume unique.
