Big Red Ant Costume
Prep Time: 8 hours
Costume Materials
- 2-3 Yards Red Felt Fabric
- 1 Yard of Black Felt Fabric
- 4 Pairs of Red Tights
- 1 Bag of Soft Fiberfill (for stuffing)
You must have some knowledge of sewing to create this. I made this costume up as I went along, but I will try and explain how it was made.
- I begin with sewing the top segment (which is like the shirt). I just created a quick circle template on a piece of kraft paper and folded down the top for the neck line.
- I then cut out four layers of red felt. Sewed two layers together (leaving top open for stuffing), turned inside out and two more layers and turned inside out (leaving top open for stuffing).
- I then sewed those together leaving room for the arm holes and neck.
- Stuffed the front and back sections with some fiberfill and closed.
- I then took the same template and created the same thing all over again this time sewing everything up after stuffing.
- I took one of the open ends and added a black point for the tail end and sewed it on. I then took that segment and sewed on the back of the first (which is like the shirt).
- I then cut off the legs of one of the pairs of tights for the arms and stiched them on. I then added the black hands of the ants. I did not sew all away around so that my son could flip it open and his fingers could pick stuff up - LIKE CANDY!
- I then took another pair of tights and cut the legs off and stuffed them with the remaining fiber fill and created the black ends out of felt. You can then velcro them inside the costume for the extra pair of legs that ants have.
- The last pair of tights were used just to wear over red shorts for his bottom legs.
- We did not create the mask, he had that already -- which is how he came up with the idea. Last year a slice of pizza, this year and ant...what will he think of next?
