I made this adorable baby blue bird costume for my 10-month-old son's first Halloween. It can be worn with tights or knit pants in case it's cold outside!

Prep Time: 2 weeks (worked on in free time)

Costume Materials
  • 1/2 yard furry light blue fabric (56" wide)
  • 1/2 yard white knit ribbing
  • extra wide double fold light blue bias tape
  • 3 metal hook and eye closures
  • one piece bright yellow felt
  • scraps of black and white felt
  • white feather boa
  • thread
  • sewing machine
Costume Instructions
  1. I used a basic romper pattern to make the body of the bird costume. When stitching the back pieces together, leave an opening approximately 12 inches from the top so there will be a way to put the costume on.
  2. Use the knit ribbing to make cuffs at the legs, arms, and along the neckline.
  3. Double fold bias tape was used to finish off the open edge along the back. Starting with one hook and eye at the neck of the costume, space three hook and eyes along the open back edge and hand stitch in place.
  4. Cut two pieces of tail from leftover blue fabric (I used a triangular shape).
  5. Sew pieces right side together, turn right side out and stitch to back of costume below bottom of opening.
  6. For the hat, I cut two pieces 18" x 8" (one from the furry blue frabric and a lining piece from the knit ribbing. For each piece, stitch short ends with right sides together. Place one fabric tube inside the other (right sides together) and stitch along the bottom edge all the way around.
  7. Turn hat right side out. Using a piece of thread and needle, make a running stitch at the top of the hat, sewing through both layers of fabric. Carefully pull the thread to gather the top of the hat and knot thread to secure.
  8. Hand sew the feather boa to the top of the hat (I only used a small section of the boa).
  9. Cut two circles of white felt and two smaller circles of black felt for the eyes. Hand stitch to the hat.
  10. Cut two identical diamond shapes from the yellow felt and sitch together around the outside edges to make the beak.
  11. Stitch to the hat.
