The Dream Team's Best Halloween Costumes: Baby Bee
Disney Family.com's Dream Team parents always have great tricks up their sleeves. So for Halloween, they've shared the secrets and stories behind their favorite homemade costumes.
Why I loved this costume:
Although Julia wore her Baby Bee costume years ago, it's still my favorite because it was Julia's first Halloween and our first Halloween as parents. Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays and being a parent made it even more enjoyable. That year we began the tradition of coming up with a costume theme for our whole family: Julia was Baby Bee, I dressed up as the Queen Bee and Dave was a bee keeper with a pith helmet and a jar of honey.
What you need:
Steps:
-
1. Before you buy the fabric, measure your child to make sure that you purchase 2 sides of yellow felt that will extend approximately from their shoulders to a few inches above their knees, and about 6 inches on either side of their hips (to give the costume a pear-shape).
2. Lay the two pieces of yellow felt on a flat surface layered on top of each other. Draw the shape of the costume on the felt — a tank-top shape on top with a rounded bottom. Turn inside out and sew up the sides and top of the shoulders leaving 2 holes for arms and one large hole for legs.
3. Turn the costume rightside out and cut several lengthwise black felt "stripes" 6 inches thick. Each stripe should be as long as the costume. Arrange evenly across the body of the costume and then glue on with fabric glue. Let the glue dry overnight.
4. Sew the wings on the back of the costume. Shape pipe cleaners into a little crown and attach two pipe cleaners to the front that extend upwards, to create "antennae." Attach white pompom balls to top of each antenna with glue.
5. Twist several black pipe cleaners together to make a "stinger" and glue to back of costume. Have your child wear the black shirt and white tights or black pants under the costume. Buzzzzz...
Please Note: To make a Queen Bee costume for Mom, follow the same instructions (just sized larger) and instead of a black pipe cleaner crown, attach antenna to a tiara. For Dad's Bee Keeper outfit, make little bees out of pipe cleaners (25 to 40) and attach to a sweater with safety pins. Put a hairnet over a pith helmet or straw hat and attach a few bees to the hat. Be sure to have the bee keeper carry a jar of honey.
