The Dream Team's Best Halloween Costumes: Headless & Horrifying!
Disney Family.com's Dream Team parents always have great tricks up their sleeves. So for Halloween, they've shared the secrets and stories behind their favorite homemade costumes.
What I loved about this costume:
When my daughter Sabrina told me she wanted to be headless for Halloween, I had two objections. One was, "Eeew!" The other was, "How on earth will I make THAT costume?" When I found out that I wouldn't have to buy any materials to make the costume, and that she could put it together with very little help, I was willing to give it a try.
The costume came out great. When we took Sabrina trick-or-treating that year, there was so much paparazzi, it was like walking through our neighborhood with a celebrity. Everyone wanted to take her picture — even people we didn't know!
You will need:
Steps:
-
1. To make the neck stump, choose a plastic jar large enough to fill the neck hole of a collared shirt. A family-sized peanut butter jar works perfectly. Empty and clean the jar. Paint the jar the same color as your skin. When that coat dries, paint the "stump" red. (Drips make it look more realistic!)
2. To make the torso, button up the shirt and stuff the top two-thirds with wadded newspaper. The newspaper is what holds the torso upright, so pack it tightly to create a stiff frame. (The sleeves don't need to be packed as fully.)
3. When the neck stump is dry, position it in the collar. Wad newspaper up inside the jar and down into the shirt to help anchor the neck stump in place. Button the top button. If necessary, cinch the collar tighter around the jar with safety pins to help hold it in place. 4. Have the child step into the pants.
5. Place the stuffed shirt over the child's head, leaving one button unbuttoned so the child's head can peek through.
6. You may need to add extra newspaper stuffing at this point to fill in some gaps.
7. Safety pin the shirt closed just above and below the child's head so the newspaper stuffing doesn't show.
8. Safety pin the shirt to the pants all the way around the waist, placing pins every couple of inches. Leave room for the child's real arms to stick out the sides so he/she can carry a flashlight and trick-or-treat bag.
9. This is the fun part! Safety pin gloves (we used gardening gloves) to the shirtsleeves. Then, move the "arms" so the wearer appears to be carrying his/her own head. Pin the gloves/sleeves in place against the shirt to secure the position.
10. Use red lipstick to add some "blood" to the child's chin and face.
Tips: Be sure to allow extra time in your trick-or-treat schedule to allow for photo-ops!
