Mom's Treasure Box

Before leaving the sea to marry Prince Eric, Ariel spent hours as a young mermaid combing the ocean floor for human artifacts to add to the cache of treasures she hid in a secret grotto. But once her daughter Melody was born, she kept her mermaid identity a secret in hopes of protecting the little girl from the wrath of the sea witch Morgana. Still, as fate would have it, Melody found her own way to the sea and quickly learned all about her mother's past firsthand -- by becoming a mermaid herself. Mermaid or landlubber, any mom would love keeping her favorite trinkets and mementos in one of these hand-decorated treasure boxes.
You'll need:
- Small box with a lid (you can buy a plain brown one at most large craft stores for a dollar or so)
- Scissors
- Scrapbook paper
- Paintbrush or foam brush
- Mod Podge or similar glue sealer
- Assorted notions and trinkets for decorating, such as buttons, sequin, faux gems, and stickers
- Tacky glue
1. Cut pieces of scrapbook paper to cover each side of the box as well as the sides and top of the box lid. You can use one piece per section or fit together several small pieces collage-style. Attach the paper pieces by brushing Mod Podge on the backs and then pressing them in place.
2. Once the box is covered, seal the surface of the paper with Mod Podge and let it dry.
3. For the finishing decorative touches, glue on assorted notions and trinkets.
