Inspired by FamilyFun readers Lisa and Ken Schmidt of New Milford, Pennsylvania, this organizing solution was the basis for our space-saving glove-and-mitten rack, designed to be hung on the back of a closet door. (Note: This project will only work with solid closet doors that you can screw into.)

Prep Time: About 1 to 2 hours
What you need:
 (6) 34" poplar 1 12-inch wide, 36" (side slats and cross pieces)
(1) small box 1 1/4-inch Phillips head sheetrock screws
(1) small box 3/4-inch Phillips head sheetrock screws
(1) quart of primer and latex paint, brushes
(20) 5/8-inch micro-mini spring clamps (available at Woodworker's Warehouse, woodworkerswarehouse.com)
Saw
tape measure
pencil
carpenter's or speed square drill(and assorted bits)
Phillips head screwdriver
Seasons: Winter, Year round
Materials: wood
Instructions:
1.Cut the cross pieces from the poplar to fit the closet door width.
2.Measure and mark the location of the cross pieces on the side slats so they are evenly spread (10 inches between each cross piece for 36" side slats). Mark and drill single holes 3/4 of an inch from the ends of the cross pieces. Attach the cross pieces to the side slats with the 1 1/4 screws, keeping the cross pieces square to the slats.
3.Prime then paint the rack. Let dry completely between coats
4.Take the assembled, painted rack and mark the location on the door so that the highest cross piece is within reach of your child. Mark and drill holes for the screws in the middle (18 inches from either end) and 6 1/2 inches from the end of each side slats. Attach the rack to the door with 1 1/4" screws.
5.Measure and mark the location of the 5/8-inch micro-mini spring clamps. Our plan calls for five clamps per closet door, set about 4 inches apart. Use the 3/4" screws to attach the clamps
6.For added neatness, we labeled each row of clamps using rubber stamps and a permanent-ink pad (such as Archival Ink, available at craft stores).
