Pumpkins, by their very nature, are magical: From one little flat seed, you can produce a vine of gargantuan proportions, with flowers and fruit to match. If you'd like to extend the magic a bit, this project allows you to create one-of-a-kind personalized pumpkins as easily as writing your name.
| Prep Time: About 1 hour | |
| What you need: | |
| 1 packet of pumpkin seeds (we used Jack-o'-Lantern)
Church-key-type can opener (or slim metal skewer) | |
| Seasons: Year round | |
| Materials: can opener, pumpkin seeds | |
| Instructions: | |
| 1. | Plant the seeds according to the packet directions. When the pumpkins just start to show orange streaks, your child can use a can opener or skewer to gently etch his name into the rind. |
| 2. | Try not to go too much deeper than 1/8 inch or you could hurt the pumpkin. Your child can personalize his pumpkins in other ways too, from drawing on a jack-o'-lantern face to scratching in his favorite sports logos. Be sure to leave the etched side up to help prevent rot. As the pumpkin gets bigger and ripens, the etching will become a tan scar. |
