Annamaria M. of Chicago was delighted when her mom, Michele, created this cozy space in her bedroom dormer. "It's just my size," says Annamaria.

Prep Time: Weekend Project
What you need:
 Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes
Drop cloth and rags
Acrylic sealer
Seasons: Year round
Materials: paints
Instructions:
1.Double-check the safety of any secret space for dangerous wiring, proper ventilation, and door latches that can be opened from both sides.
2.Use acrylic paint to embellish the walls with flowers, clouds, and butterflies. If you'd rather not paint freehand, Michele suggests stencils, foam stamps, or rub-on decals. If you plan to create freehand flowers, invest in good art brushes. They can make a big difference in the finished product.
3.Spray the painted walls with an acrylic sealer to protect your designs, especially in areas susceptible to dirty handprints or spills. Ventilate the area while you spray and after, if necessary.
4.Hang inexpensive floral vines (from a craft store) and other items like a straw hat to add to the effect.
5.For the finishing touch, Michele placed books and a small table and chairs in the garden.

I think any special space that you can give your children to read is wonderful. When I was a teacher, I always had a special reading corner that was comfortable and inviting. I have done the same thing in my sons' room, and when they make a huge mess with their books, I don't mind!
