The six-pointed star is believed to have decorated the shield of David, the Jewish king. It can also grace your holiday table in the form of these blue and gold clay napkin rings.

| Baking soda

| Materials: clay , paints | |
| Instructions: | |
| 1. | To make the clay, measure 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch and 2/3 cup water in a saucepan, and mix. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture resembles mashed potatoes. Let cool, then knead until elastic. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. |
| 2. | For each ring, cut out two equilateral triangles (ours are about 2 1/2 inches on each side). Overlap two triangles and use a straw to poke two holes for the cord. |
| 3. | Separate the triangles and bake at 250 degrees for 15 minutes. Flip the pieces and bake for another 15 minutes (thicker pieces may need more time). Let cool, then paint the stars blue. |
| 4. | When the paint is dry, line up one triangle atop the other, thread the cord as shown and knot around the napkin. |
