Celebrate the first day of May with an age-old tradition -- making a May basket.
Tips
Fill the basket with fresh flowers or candy, then surprise
a friend by anonymously hanging it from his or her
doorknob.
| Prep Time: Under 1 hour | |
| What you need: | |
| Construction paper
Ruler Pencil Scissors Glue | |
| Seasons: Spring, Valentine's day | |
| Materials: paper | |
| Instructions: | |
| 1. | Fold two 3 x 9-inch paper rectangles in half lengthwise (this forms the two halves of the heart). Place them on a table so that the creases are at the bottom. |
| 2. | Measure 3 inches up from each crease and use a pencil to lightly draw a straight line across the paper. With scissors, round off the top of each half, above the line. |
| 3. | On each half, mark 1-inch increments along the crease. Make a straight cut up from each mark to the pencil line to form three flaps for weaving the two halves together. |
| 4. | Hold one half of the heart in each hand. Weave the upper
flap of the right half through the flaps of the left half by
slipping it through the center of the first one, around the
middle one, and through the third one. |
| 5. | Next, weave in the middle flap of the right half, this time
slipping it around the first flap, through the second flap, and
around the third flap. Finally, weave in the last flap following
the same sequence you used with the upper flap. If done
correctly, the woven heart will open into a basket. |
| 6. | For a handle, just glue the ends of the construction paper
strip to the inside of the heart, and the basket is ready to
fill. |
Variations
This heart-shaped basket also makes a sweet Valentine for
