Kids are generally discouraged from applying food to their clothing, but this craft provides a chance to bend the rules.
Tips
Any produce that's not too juicy will work, so get
creative. Onions make good circles; apples cut lengthwise look
like butterflies; broccoli and mushrooms resemble trees; a
cantaloupe wedge or pea pod makes a lovely smile.
| Prep Time: Under 1 hour | |
| What you need: | |
| Cardboard
Prewashed white cotton T-shirt Masking tape Pie plates Nontoxic fabric paint Knife Fruits and/or vegetables Paper towels Newspaper | |
| Seasons: Summer, Year round | |
| Materials: fabric, food items, paints | |
| Instructions: | |
| 1. | Slip the cardboard inside the shirt, stretch the shirt tightly around it, and tape the sleeves and sides to the back. |
| 2. | Set out pie plates and pour a different color of paint into each. Cut open the fruits and veggies (a parents job) and use a paper towel to blot the produce. |
| 3. | Next, press the stamps into the paint. Do a test run on newspaper, showing kids how to press firmly without squeezing out any juice. When ready, move on to the shirts. Try patterns, landscapes, silly faces or abstract designs. |
| 4. | Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setting the paint. |
