Music Review: "Bulletproof" (CD single)

"BULLETPROOF" is the '80s-infused single from British group La Roux -- a synth-pop duo consisting of lead vocalist Eleanor Jackson (whose red hair led to the act's name) and lead keyboardist Ben Langmaid. The song is a simple anthem to all those who no longer want to be toyed with by the object of their affections. Its lyrics make a strong statement about not allowing a bad relationship back in your life, but they steer clear of explicit language, sexual references, mentions of substance use, or talk of violence. The straightforward lines include: "Been there done that messed around / I'm having fun don't put me down / I'll never let you sweep me off my feet / This time baby I'll be bulletproof."
The members of La Roux have claimed to be influenced by several '80s bands, including Depeche Mode, Erasure, and The Human League. All of these bands helped to establish the signature sound that the era is known for. Unfortunately, " Bulletproof" sounds like a less creative imitation of the classic tunes created by these bands 30 years ago. The synth-pop hook is nothing unique, and Eleanor Jackson's vocals sound like a higher, whinier version of Alison Moyet's -- lead singer of the awesome '80s group Yaz.
