Music Review: 90210 Soundtrack

Mixed bag of rock and pop; not quite as edgy as the TV show.

What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that just as the TV show is sexier, juicier, and meaner than its predecessor, the music is too. (You won't find Paula Abdul on this soundtrack.) There's some iffy language, minor innuendo, and a song titled "Valium" that might make the drug sound cool, but if your kids are already watching the show, listening to the soundtrack probably won't be a big deal.

The 90210 SOUNDTRACK was produced exclusively for the hit TV series, featuring 14 new tracks for the show's 2009-2010 season. The album features songs from Adele and The Raconteurs, N.E.R.D., Owl City, The All-American Rejects, Darrelle London, Jet, and MuteMath, among others. The soundtrack is a mix of pop, garage rock, folk rock, and techno-funk, and will have fans pumped and primed for the latest drama from the teens at West Beverly. There's a thirty-second snippet of the show's theme, the 2009 remix.

Although fans of the show will buy this CD because of its association with the program, others may find themselves checking it out for the collaborative track between Adele and Jack White and The Raconteurs. There are some tunes to write home about; "Soldier" is definitley catchy and club-heavy, and Jet's "One-Hipster One Bullit" is refreshing with its classic rock rant about hipsters. "A Perfect Tourniquet" is surprisingly endearing, and London's "Understand" is unique. MuteMath ( Twilight Soundtrack) mellows on "Valium," but the rest of the songs are borderline lame in their lyrics; for example, "Sunburn" offers the cringe-worthy line: "Playing on the beach, we'd live and learn...but she got a tan and I got a sunburn." Overall, this is a mixed bag musically, but teens will find a few good songs to make it worthwhile.
