Television Review: Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island
What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this show is the TV equivalent of
sugary cereal, and nothing more. Kids are going to like the
idea of an island full of zany fruit characters like Coconut
Fred, Bingo Cherry, and Mr. Greenrind, but some parents will
find the program raucous and loud. While he's not a malignant
force, Coconut Fred is an anti-hero in the vein of Bugs Bunny.
Families can talk about comedy: What's the line between wacky
and annoying? What specifically do kids find entertaining about
this show? How does it compare to other cartoons?
Island life takes an amusing twist when all of its inhabitants are living pieces of fruit. Mr. Greenrind is a watermelon who keeps track of activities, while characters like Wedgie the lemon and Slip and Slide the twin bananas keep things colorful.
Besides Coconut Fred's hyperactive antics, nothing terribly memorable occurs on this program. Some viewers might see similarities between this show and SpongeBob SquarePants, and may appreciate the similar off-the-wall humor. Fred protects his small friend Bingo the cherry from Butchy the rotten apple's bullying behavior, but he usually follows his own agenda of wacky capers. He yells, he begs, and he manipulates his fellow islanders so that they will engage in his kooky schemes. But then again, the plot is not really the point in Coconut Fred's nutty head. He's more concerned with the jokes and tricks that Bugs Bunny did so much better.
