What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that they can feel safe letting tweens
watch this show; each episode provides an interesting, engaging
history lesson packaged in a kid-friendly format.
- Families can talk about what we can learn from history. What lessons have historical events taught us? How have things we take for granted today evolved over the centuries? Parents and kids might have fun looking at everyday things like clothes and computers and talking about where they got their start.
Discovery Kids' TIMEBLAZERS takes viewers on a trip back in time to see what life was like centuries ago. The program is hosted by Shakira (Jasmine Richards), a smart 13-year-old who narrates while historians Sam (Mike Ackerman) and Jen (Heidi Leigh) illustrate why the world works the way it does.
In one episode devoted to fashion trends, for example, the cast first shows viewers how the skirt evolved from what was worn in the 1800s to the minis of today, then visits British troops from 200 years ago to teach viewers how military uniforms have changed over time. Other episodes have shown how carrier pigeons and smoke signals preceded text messaging and how home security started with the caveman. Young viewers will get a kick out of the goofy hijinks Sam uses to illustrate Shakira's history lessons.
There's little about Timeblazers with which to find fault. Kids will enjoy seeing their peers onscreen, and parents will breathe easy knowing their kids aren't watching fluff.
