What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that while teens are featured in this
adventure travel series, it's perfectly fine for younger
viewers, too. In locations all over the world, the teens and
their host explore local culture, perform extreme sports, and
learn about each country's diverse ecosystem. Viewers are
treated to action-packed, informative, funny segments that help
broaden their worldview.
Families can talk about the cultural highlights of each
episode. How do the different countries' customs relate to
yours? What can kids (and grown-ups!) learn from other
cultures? Why is it so important to understand how people live
in other places? Families can also use the extreme-sports
segments as an opportunity to review safety guidelines.
AWESOME ADVENTURES is a syndicated adventure travel show for tweens and teens that highlights topics like sports, animals, and music. Accompanied by host Anthony Montgomery ( Star Trek: Enterprise), in each episode a pair of teens hike, bike, parasail, and even sometimes raft through exotic locales like Costa Rica, Iceland, and Belize. Using these beautiful countries as a backdrop, Awesome Adventures educates viewers about geography, zoology, history, and world culture through fun action-adventure segments. The overall tone of the show is very light and quite silly at times, but that's usually due to Montgomery's goofball antics.
Kids who are interested in traveling and learning about new cultures will also enjoy the show's focus on world culture. Whether it's food, music, customs, or local entertainment, Montgomery and his guests will be there to explain the wonders of each country they visit.
While Awesome Adventures may not entertain everyone, it certainly does a fantastic job of catering to tweens and teens who are interested in extreme sports, curious about the world, or just love to travel. Extreme-sports fans will enjoy watching the travelers zoom by in snowmobiles, raft down rapids, and scuba dive in breathtaking coral reefs. The show's cameras are often attached to helmets or on the front of bikes to capture the unadulterated thrill of high-action sports. Kids who are interested in traveling and learning about new cultures will also enjoy the show's focus on world culture. Whether it's food, music, customs, or local entertainment, Montgomery and his guests will be there to explain the wonders of each country they visit.
Overall, Awesome Adventures has what it takes to keep kids interested, as well as the right tactics to slide in some educational info. But since the series is syndicated, its fate is vulnerable to rampant schedule changes and may be hard to track down. That's a shame, since it would be at home on any of the Discovery network channels and is a great alternative to the overflowing barrel of teen high school dramas. If you can catch the Awesome Adventures wave, you're in for a great ride.
