What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that 50 Cent is up to his tedious old
tricks. The explicit version of this movie soundtrack album is
filled with sexist, violent, and racist sentiment -- and the
edited version sounds just plain ridiculous since there is
nothing left after the edits.
Families can talk about why this kind of monotonous posturing
is still so popular. Why can't rappers be successful without
promoting violence and using racist and sexist language?
50 Cent has taken his sexist, misogynist, violent posturing onto the silver screen with his first movie, and the inevitable ferociously marketed soundtrack, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN'. He breaks no new ground on this CD. The sad thing is, 50 Cent is talented, with an ear for instrumentation and for vivid, visceral storytelling. There are some wonderful rhythm tracks and clever rhymes. But he's so stuck on "f--k" and the "N"-word, not to mention a brand of misogyny that verges on the pathological, that it's hard to wade through to find the elusive "redeeming social importance" of his droning, monotonous profanity.
It turns out that this CD is exactly as boring and uninspired as its long title. The background tracks are as tedious, and the vocals as monotone, as ever. If only 50 Cent would change pitch once in a while...or say something nice about a woman... Kids might love this stuff now, and even enjoy getting a rise out of their parents by downloading and playing it. But they'll get bored soon enough. Because this music may try to be shocking, sexist, and nasty, but mostly it's just plain tedious.
