What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this band sounds like a retread of
other, better bands.
Families can talk about the importance maintaining a spark of
originality no matter who your musical influences may be.
Overwrought and unoriginal, THREE DAYS GRACE has very little going for it. The pedestrian lyrics, hysterical vocals, uninspired guitar solos, thrashing and tedious rhythm section, and easy-to-define influences leave little left to love. There's nothing inherently wrong with paying tribute to one's favorite artists, but the danger comes when a band brings nothing new to the table. This self-titled debut effort screams "Hey, we're a bad Soundgarden/Black Sabbath tribute band," not "We love the old stuff and we're also adding a little something of our own." Ultimately, this makes all the difference.
The lyrics are ridiculous examples of just-plain-bad writing. "We have no use for the truth/Now's the time for us to lose/Who we are and how we've tried/Taking every step in stride" is just one of many instances of bad lyrics. The performances are good but not great. There's some swearing, a few lines about drinking, a gun reference or two. But the worst thing about Three Days Grace is that it's just plain boring.
