What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this show follows a group of divers who go in search of sunken boats and lost treasures, many of which have colorful pasts. This lends itself to intrigue and suspense, since it's not always clear right away whether what they find is what they went looking for. The dangerous nature of the job -- exploring underwater wrecks -- can make episodes tense and even scary sometimes, but expertise prevails in the end.

  • Families can talk about water safety. What precautions should you take when swimming, rafting, or diving? What kinds of training do the divers have? Families can also talk about the research methods and technologies the divers use to identify their targets. What types of data does the team gather, and how do they go about getting it? How does their work affect the environment around the wrecks?

In MYSTERIES OF THE DEEP, divers explore the ocean's depths to find some of history's most significant underwater shipwrecks and lost treasures. Narrated by Dr. Robert Ballard (famous for discovering the wrecks of the Titanic and the Bismarck), each episode presents a different mystery and profiles the explorers attempting to solve it. In one episode, for example, a group of commercial divers traverses Lake Erie while trying to find the remains of a ship called the Phoenix, which went down in the 1800s while transporting more than 100 Irish immigrants. Viewers see the divers exploring different parts of the lake and finding other wrecks as they attempt to locate the Phoenix. They also learn interesting facts about the lake -- such as how different species of fish were responsible for clearing out the algae, ultimately resulting in cleaner water.

Mysteries of the Deep will not only appeal to kids interested in science, but also to viewers intrigued by adventure and suspense. There's little to dislike, and parents should feel comfortable letting kids tune in.
