What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that although the movie is fine for
most grade-schoolers, this soundtrack is more appropriate for
the middle school crowd.
Families can talk about the two versions of the CD cover art:
One has a ghoulish cover, while the other has a more
innocent-looking one with the clean-cut cast. Who are they
marketing to with each cover?
SCOOBY DOO 2 falls into the category of motion picture soundtrack CDs that feature a disjointed mix of popular songs. There's no story or content theme in this grab bag of artists hot on today's pop scene or yanked from the past.
The most objectionable lyrics from original versions are bleeped or faded. Messages range from dark to light. The Nirvana-inspired Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" laments "They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee ... I wanna pierce my tongue." The Earth Wind and Fire classic "Shining Star" updated by Ruben Studdard is uplifting.
The CD, including DVD, is marketed with a variety of cover art. While the one with ghoulish images might make a parent have second thoughts, the version with the clean-cut cast looks innocent enough for a younger child. The music inside each version is the same and not meant for young children.
