What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that the songs on this album include
violent images and sound effects, including machine-gun fire.
When the lyrics mention sex, women's body parts are explicitly
mentioned in leering appreciation. Besides the sexist talk, the
n-word and four-letter curses flow freely.
Families can talk about chameleons and find all the "chameleon
puns" in the lyrics. What is a chameleon, and why do you think
Chamillionaire likes the image so much? Why do you think he's
chosen to include so much violence and racist, sexist language
in his work?
If you took away the lead vocals on THE SOUND OF REVENGE, as well as the machine-gun sound effects, you'd have an album of beautifully produced instrumental tracks that would make any hip-hop artist proud. The problem with this CD from Chamillionaire is a combination of lyrics and vocal delivery. Aggressive while also sounding somehow lackluster, Chamillionaire takes a very long time to say very little. The content isn't only boring but also racist, sexist, and violent.
The performances are monotonous; the songs all tediously long. It's too bad, because someone involved in this CD had some taste and production finesse. The instrumental tracks are wonderful -- they bubble along under Chamillionaire's unappealing vocals with energy, imagination, and passion. But unfortunately there's no redeeming social or literary value, words are used for shock value only, and the message ends up sounding both arrogant and ignorant rather than exciting or even socially conscious.
