What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this soundtrack offers pleasant
rock with messages of diversity and empowerment. The only
downside is the overt commercialism, with TV show, video, and
book tie-ins.
Families can talk about whether or not the CD made them want to
see the movie. If they saw the movie, did that make them want
to buy this CD?
There's not much to THE CHEETAH GIRLS SOUNDTRACK, a CD of tunes from the Cheetah Girls' Disney Channel movie. Perky and upbeat, with a squeaky-clean message of diversity, independence, and empowerment, the girls make fine role models for young fans. (But be warned -- girls who loved the TV movie might be disappointed with the CD and its packaging: only eight tunes and no liner notes or personal information about the Cheetah Girls.)
Raven, Sobrina Bryan, Adrienne Bailon, and Kelly Williams do a fine job on vocals, but lackluster production values make the whole thing sound prefabricated and unexceptional. The Cheetah Girls are adorable, and it's great that their "girl-power" message comes through loud and clear. But in a perfect world, more attention would be paid to the musical presentation as well. Young fans deserve better than this; we need role models with musical, as well as social, integrity.
