What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that B2K can't seem to decide whether
to be a schmaltzy boy band or a scary street gang, but this
makes for an interesting soundtrack CD. Mild by current
standards, there's a bit of sexual innuendo and a disturbing
word or two.
Families can talk about how the music and movie go
hand-in-hand. How do you think the movie benefits from the kind
of music chosen for the soundtrack? Does it take away from the
movie at all? Also, does a good soundtrack make you want to see
the movie or make a movie better?
It's been hard to avoid the advance buzz about this ever-so-slightly edgy boy band's film debut in "You Got Served." B2K gives some fine performances in the YOU GOT SERVED SOUNDTRACK, which is carefully and lovingly produced. There's predictable self-congratulatory macho posturing. Yet in the context of lively, infectious dance tracks, lyrics like "Get a drink and your Movah, after that we gonna get to the (Range) Rovuh" or "Turn around, make it bounce, shake it like you come from out of town...Mami I'm just tryin' to get you in my room, and see that big badabing go badaboom" can seem sporty and even cute.
The CD's ballads are well-performed but formulaic, offering no surprises. With a little help from friends like Lil' Kim, Fabulous, Rufus Black, XSO Drive featuring Red Cafe, and M.O.P. featuring Funkmaster Flex, the boys in B2K deliver a pleasant and occasionally wonderful soundtrack album.
