What Parents Should Know
This is a highly entertaining racing game, though parents
may have worry that it's materialistic and that it glamorizes
street races.
You won't find any billboards flashing sponsor logos, and all manufacturers' logos are subtle, but cars from top auto manufacturers are used in the game. Parents may want to talk to their kids about their own interest in cars. Does the make of the car matter to you? Why do people spend so much time and money dressing up their cars? What do you think about this?
Also, parents -- especially parents with kids closer to driving age -- might want to discuss the dangers of street racing. Have they heard about sideshows? What are some of the consequences of traveling at such high speeds on city streets?
Common Sense Media Review
There are numerous racing games on the market, but Rockstar
Games newest release, MIDNIGHT CLUB 3:DUB EDITION, a joint
effort with DUB Magazine, races ahead of the competition.
Midnight Club 3 is an arcade racer that provides players with challenging checkpoint races throughout. Players begin in San Diego with $20,000 and choose from a limited number of cars to purchase. As players progress through the game, they can earn more money which can be used to customize their cars and purchase new ones. Once players have conquered the city streets of San Diego, they move to Atlanta and Detroit. Each city provides players with many challenges, from courses that take you through back alleys and hidden shortcuts, to wide open streets that allow players to test the limits of their vehicles.
The game offers players a realistic racing experience. The controls are easy to maneuver, giving players a true sense of speed that makes every turn feel like you're actually behind the wheel of a high performance race car. If you spin out, or veer of the race track, you can quickly recover and get back into the game, adding an element of excitement to each racing session.
A variety of game modes helps make Midnight Club 3 a game that players don't want to put down. Single player mode allows players to test their driving skills against the racecourse, while the multi-player mode allows players to square off in head-to-head competition. Online play is also available for those that are equipped, providing thrills for as many as eight players at one time.
The games soundtrack consists of an impressive line up of hip-hop, rock, dance hall, and electronic artists, including such name acts as The Game, M.I.A., Kasabian, Queens of the Stone Age, Beenie Man, Nine Inch Nails, the Ying Yang Twins, and Jimmy Eat World. The other sounds that are noticeable throughout the game are the crashes. The crunching sound is easy to hear when you crash into another car. However, the crashes may be one of the downsides of the game. The crashes are not very realistic, as it takes multiple crashes to even see any damage to your vehicle. Major crashes may result in a few scrapes and scratches that won't keep you from continuing through the game.
If you have purchased the first two Midnight Club games for your kid, you won't be throwing away your money if you purchase this new edition. The game offers many updates, including an impressive line up of vehicles. In fact, players can choose from over 50 licensed vehicles produced by some of the top manufacturers in the business. In addition, customization options include everything from paint, rims and your choice of engine parts.
There are several classes of cars represented in the game, and each has their own unique features. The larger class of cars, which includes SUVs and trucks, allow players to knock other cars out of the way as they make their way to the finish line. Smaller model cars can move at high rates of speed, giving players the ability to speed maneuver in and out of traffic with ease. These cars are often much more difficult to control on the racetrack and require a good feel for the controls to successfully complete races.
Overall, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a great game for players of all ages. The game is easy to play, but offers enough challenges along the way to keep players interested and excited in continuing.
