What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this is the first album from
rising Disney Channel star
Demi
Lovato, best known for playing Mitchie in
Camp
Rock
and making
YouTube
videos extraordinaire with fellow Disney darling
Selena
Gomez. Lovato and her music have a bit more edgy than
standard Disney fare, but the subject matter is age-appropriate
for most tweens -- expect lots of talk about young love and
relationships and staying true to yourself while having a
positive self-image.
Families can talk about the images of young stars like Lovato,
Gomez, and
Miley
Cyrus. Do you think they're seen as positive role models,
especially in the eyes of tweens and teens? Do you think
they're presented accurately in the media? How do you feel
about the fact that many of these young stars like to post
videos and blogs on the Internet?
With a little help from good friends the Jonas Brothers, fellow Camp Rock -er Demi Lovato releases her debut album, DON'T FORGET. It's full of 11 hook-laden tracks that have hints of JoBros-brand pop-rock, with Lovato's own feminine touch.
Pairing slick musical arrangements with powerful, fresh, yet sweetly endearing vocals, Lovato seems to be in a league of her own when it comes to the ever-growing teen pop-star club these days (move over, Miley!). Though she's only 16, Lovato's voice has incredible control and strength -- which balance well with her edgier, rockier sound. At the same time, she manages to pull back in just the right places to bend your ear to her delicate vocal lines.
Every song is good, with real self examination and declaration that could empower young girls to be true to themselves. "Trainwreck," "On the Line," (which she sings with the Jonases), and "Until You're Mine" will get you early, and title track "Don't Forget" is haunting and sweet.
