What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this is essentially a collection
of 18 ever-popular parental lectures about grooming and
behavior trying to disguise themselves as kid-friendly rock
songs. Some parents may not want their toddlers and
preschoolers listening to songs about farts and boogers -- lest
they start repeating all the funny words they hear -- but if
you're OK with lyrics about bodily functions, there's nothing
age-inappropriate here.
Families can talk about how parents get points across when they
need to. Do you think songs like the ones on this CD are an
effective way to teach kids about things like manners, hitting,
and staying safe?
A decent guitarist who knows his way around a drum machine, Chris Bihuniak was undoubtedly an asset in his high school rock band. And as the father of four young boys he must be more fun than most, turning parental lectures about things like grooming and manners into poems and songs -- as he does in this collection of 18 short ditties.
Unfortunately, though, it's all pretty preachy, and SILLY SHORT SONGS FOR SILLY SHORT PEOPLE falls flat if you don't personally know and love the artist, who actually seems to be a very nice and talented guy.
The project would benefit from another musical voice -- 18 songs by one singer with a guitar and a synthesized rhythm section start sounding tediously similar -- and more attention paid to the subtleties of songwriting. Even the songs about boogers, farts, burping, and dirty diapers -- usually a slam-dunk for hitting kids' funny bones -- sound a little listless and should be a lot funnier than they are.
