What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this soundtrack to the movie
Bratz:
Girlz Really Rock
is a safe compilation of light and fun dance songs that
are primarily about friendship, although a few of the tracks go
a bit beyond innocent friendships. There's a love song duet, a
song about the Bratz girls future successes (namely being on
fashion magazine covers and living the celebrity lifestyle),
and another that laments that success is nothing without
someone to share it with.
Families can talk about the Bratz girls' priorities. Do you
think they take school and work seriously, or are they more
about partying, dancing, and socializing? How do you think the
girls show friendship? With songs like "Friendship is
Everything" and "It's All About Me," do you think the they
might make some girls feel insecure about themselves,
especially if they're not popular in school or into
fashion?
Trying to capitalize on the success of tween hits Camp Rock and High School Musical , the Bratz have released a similar direct-to-DVD movie about a performance art camp. The soundtrack is a set of eight upbeat, girly songs that can be found in the musical, as well as their related instrumentals -- probably included for karaoke sessions.
Surprisingly fun, this soundtrack is ripe with hip-hop beats and diva-inspired vocals and has a production level similar to popular mainstream acts like Miley Cyrus. Some of the best songs on the album include the fun "Everything We Do" and "We're Gonna Shine" (which sounds a lot like "What Time Is It?" from High School Musical 2 ). "Friends Are Everything" has a great jazz piano accompaniment and "Summertime Fun" is as enjoyable as it sounds. With these songs, the Bratz do a good job of bringing the trend of tween musicals down to the elementary school level. It's only when the girls digress into being self-absorbed (like on "It's All About Me") that the album falls short of the Disney standard.
