Music Review: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything Soundtrack
What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that although the soundtrack takes a
cue from the VeggieTales movie, with lots of Pirate-themed
instrumentals and some silly songs, there are few songs on the
album that will inspire kids to "do something." The brand has a
Christian bent, but religion only appears in the bonus track of
the soundtrack (the song talks about asking for God's
forgiveness). Other themes include overcoming fear, doing the
right thing, and carpe diem.
Families can talk about having the courage to try new things.
The title song lists all the things that the pirates haven't
done. What are they missing by choosing to sit at home and
watch TV? What new things would you like to try? Also, families
can discuss that it's natural to be scared to try something
new. Parents and older siblings can share things they were at
first scared to try.
The soundtrack to the VeggieTales movie, THE PIRATES WHO DON'T DO ANYTHING, is an upbeat set of 16 tracks, half of which are nautically styled instrumentals. Stand-out tunes include the title song and tobyMac's hip-hop/pop track "What We Gonna Do?" Overall, the songs are easy to listen to and fun; however, they appear to miss their target demographic. Tracks such as "The Right Thing" by Mandisa (finalist from American Idol) might be a bit too complex for the VeggieTales main fan base of 3- to 6-year-olds ("Doing the right thing is just too hard/but I believed those lies long enough/and I'm not gonna listen anymore").
Some of the songs do seem to present the silliness that young children enjoy, such as "Yo Ho Hero" and "Jolly Joe's" (though the latter track makes some curious suggestions to young listeners -- "Whack your shipmate in the eye!/Yank his hair and break his nose..."). In the end, the album is a nice, fun listen with some very good tracks. Unfortunately, the soundtrack may leave listeners wanting more: more excitement and more inspiration.
