What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that this anime series can be extremely violent. The police fight scary demons by decapitating them with gigantic swords, which they wield in slow-motion displays that show off the resulting blood splatters. Gross, worm-like monsters attack humans and turn them into dangerous demons. Female characters sometimes wear revealing outfits; one policewoman seems to be topless aside from a jacket that barely covers her breasts. There are also some adult relationship dynamics, including jealousy and arguing.

Families can talk about the recurring themes in anime series. Why do you think so many tend to deal with demons, monsters, or other sci-fi and fantasy creatures? Why are people drawn to monster stories in the first place? What purpose do they serve in our culture? What are the most memorable monsters from television, film, and/or comics?

TOKKO is a Japanese anime series about a young police officer -- Ranmaru Shindo (voiced by Tony Oliver) -- who was orphaned when his apartment complex was destroyed as a teen. He later becomes part of a special police task force to investigate his parents' death. In the course of the investigation, he starts having recurring dreams about a specific girl. He later meets her in person and discovers that she's part of an elite, mysterious police force that fights demons. What's more, he finds out that these demons are also planning to kill him -- and were behind the destruction of his apartment.

With that main plot thread holding the series together, additional elements -- such as police politics, mystical tattoos, and horrible massacres -- combine to make it a captivating, if bloody, series. Expect plenty of dramatic decapitations and flesh-eating demons, as well as some skimpy outfits.
