What Parents Should Know
Parents need to know that there is some strong language
(four-letter words) on this CD. The lyrics also include a
couple references to sexually predatory behavior and getting
high.
Families can talk about the concept of something (or someone)
being weird for its own sake. Have you ever done anything
bizarre or unconventional just to be different? What reaction
did you get? What are other ways to be heard and stand out?
OutKast's IDLEWILD is more a companion CD than a soundtrack of the 2006 film Idlewild. It incorporates gospel, swing, blues, soul, and acid rock. There's even a 1930s-style ragtime on "When I Look in Your Eyes," a theatrical and whimsical delight. An all-star roster turns up to lend their talents, including Khujo Goodie, Killer Mike, Li'l Wayne, Macy Gray, and Snoop Dogg.
Idlewildstarts out with references to Laurence Olivier and Cab Calloway -- your first clue that this is no ordinary hip-hop album. While Andre and Big Boi are strong on originality and musical risk-taking, they can be weak on sequencing and consistency. Idlewild often careens wildly from one extreme sound or theme to another, and a lot of the musical experimentation doesn't really work.
